Industrial heat pumps: the technology is ready – and the transition is happening.

That was the clear message that stood out at the High-Temperature Heat Pump Symposium 2026 in Copenhagen in January.

The event brought together a rapidly growing community of experts working on industrial heat, electrification and large-scale heat pump deployment. The strong turnout and full programme reflected a clear signal: interest in high-temperature heat pumps is accelerating across industry, policy and research.

The question is no longer whether high-temperature heat pumps can play a major role in industrial decarbonisation, but how quickly deployment can scale. Discussions repeatedly highlighted the role of politics and economics in creating the right conditions, with stable policy frameworks and access to affordable, clean electricity seen as critical to speeding up uptake.

Reflecting these discussions, EHPA Policy Director Jozefien Vanbecelaere summarised the symposium’s key messages in a short video from the event floor:

Beyond the headline messages, several themes stood out across the two days. As EHPA’s Policy Director put it in her video summary, “it’s all about integration now.” Europe’s strength lies not only in manufacturing, but in system integration, engineering and adapting solutions to real industrial processes – a major share of project value and a key advantage as supply chains become more global.

A holistic approach to deployment is therefore essential. Early involvement of end users, alignment with industrial equipment and processes, and cooperation across the value chain can turn individual projects into solutions that are repeatable at scale.

Flexibility is also moving up the agenda. The role of thermal and electrical storage, and how high-temperature heat pumps can support the power system, were widely discussed – with clear potential still to be unlocked in practice and in market design.

At the symposium, EHPA contributed to these discussions by participating in the sessions, engaging stakeholders onsite, and presenting EU-funded innovation projects on industrial heat pumps, including Push2Heat, BETTED, SPIRIT, EXQUISHEAT and GeoFlex. Together, these initiatives showcase how high-temperature heat pumps are moving from niche applications to a central role in industrial decarbonisation.

Presentations from the symposium will be available on the event website https://hthp-symposium.org/hthp-symposium-2026/.

From the latest compressor technologies to the most advanced large-scale heat pumps, the European Heat Pump Summit 2025 in Nuremberg brought together experts and industry leaders shaping the future of the heat pump sector.

The European Heat Pump Association’s contribution to the congress focused on one of the industry’s most crucial topics: trust.

In the session ‘Building trust in the heat pump market: the role of EU policies’ Saverio Papa, Head of Energy Policy, explored how European climate and energy policies are shaping the market.*

Drawing on EHPA market data, the presentation also highlighted a growing industry with more than 300 manufacturing sites and 433,000 jobs across Europe.

As the EU prepares two key plans that will focus on boosting electrification and heating and cooling for 2026, scaling up heat pumps will require stable policy frameworks and reliable quality assurance.

Reflecting on the event, EHPA Director Paul Kenny underlined the remarkable innovation on display – from smarter control systems and district heating solutions to industrial applications and even cleaner beer production.

Yet affordable electricity remains the key driver for the sector’s growth.

Every industrialist I spoke to agreed – projects thrive when electricity costs no more than twice that of competing fossil fuels. That’s what will rocket the sector forward,” commented Kenny.

With technology advancing fast and trust at the heart of Europe’s policy and certification landscape, the heat pump industry is ready to drive the next chapter of the clean energy transition.

Industrial heat pumps have massive potential.

They can already decarbonise most industrial processes below 200°C  – from brewing and pasteurising to drying, paper, and pharma — using proven, commercial technology.

This could cover 39% of Europe’s process heat demand.

These systems don’t just save energy – they recover waste heat, stabilise the grid, and strengthen energy security.

Industrial heat pumps are the “sleeping giant” of Europe’s energy transition.

At Industrial Heat Pumps International Conference (IHP Prague) on 4-5 November, our policy director Jozefien Vanbecelaere made the point that take-up must be increased.

The EU is pushing this through policies more focused on encouraging industrial electrification, and by providing financing via a new ‘Innovation Fund’ auction for projects that decarbonise industrial process heat. This will be key to helping industry implement the switch from fossil fuel–based technologies to clean alternatives such as heat pumps.

Another key step in EHPA’s view would be by governments by shifting taxes off the electricity bill to make electrification more competitive.

One way of doing this is by shifting taxes off the electricity bill – this goes for both industrial players and for domestic power bills.

EHPA policy officer Marcin Krupski also spoke at the conference, on the latest concerning the rules around refrigerants and PFAS.

The agenda at IHP Prague included themes such as:

  • the deployment of industrial and district heat pumps across sectors and regions,
  • opportunities in high-temperature storage and system flexibility,
  • the evolution of business models and financing schemes, and
  • strategies for integrating heat pumps into wider decarbonisation pathways.

More on EHPA’s work on industrial heat pumps.

Through cartoons, comedy and a cartload of colour, a new book tells the story of how Europe heats and cools its buildings and industry – and why doing so in a clean, sustainable way is necessary and inevitable.

Launching on Wednesday 22 October in Brussels, the day after Heat Pump Day, the aim behind the heating transition colouring book is to bring fun and humour to a topic which can appear dry and technical.

Paul Kenny, Director General of the European Heat Pump Association said:
“Heat Pump Day is all about widening people’s awareness of the power of heat pumps and clean heating technologies – and what better way than through this accessible and engaging book! We will be ensuring it gets into policymakers’ hands too, so they can read all about what needs to be done while they colour in the pages.”

The heating transition colouring book is a joint initiative of the Cool Heating Coalition, the European Climate Foundation, the European Heat Pump Association, and Thomas Nowak from Qvantum Industries and Marek Miara of Fraunhofer ISE. The book is designed and hand-drawn by Ellery Studios.

Thomas Nowak, VP of Government Relations and Public Affairs at Qvantum Industries said:

“Why a colouring book?” I’ve been asked more than once. Well — it’s for the child in all of us. After all, when it comes to the energy transition in heating, a little imagination goes a long way. Doodling opens the mind to creative ideas, and drawing a colourful picture of the future will show all of us what we can do to achieve it – today.”

You can still register to join the launch event at the Wild Rover Irish Pub, Brussels on 22 October. Colouring a-plenty, and drinks and nibbles to keep you fresh.

Heat Pump Day is an annual initiative coordinated by the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) on and around 21 October. It is a celebration of heat pump technology and its vital role in decarbonising heating and cooling across Europe. This year it brings together over 60 initiatives from across Europe organised by EHPA’s members and partners.

Three-quarters of industrial CO emissions come from heat. From paper and glass to chemicals and steel, most of Europe’s factories rely on high-temperature processes still powered by fossil fuels. But the technologies to change that already exist — and they’re electric.

The many benefits of electrifying industrial heat, from cutting emissions to strengthening competitiveness and driving Europe’s net zero transformation, were the focus of EHPA’s most recent webinar.

Watt’s next: a shift to an electric and efficient net zero industry” was co-organised with the Knowledge Centre on Organic Rankine Cycle technology (KCORC) and the European Climate Foundation (ECF) .

Christian Noll, from the German energy efficiency organisation, opened with a powerful message: “Efficient process heating is the missing puzzle piece of industrial decarbonisation.”

He highlighted that 75% of industrial emissions come from heat use and that halving energy demand could save companies billions each year, with savings estimated to top €21 billion in Germany alone.

His call for stronger policy action  – including embedding the EU’s ‘Energy Efficiency First’ principle – set the tone for the discussion.

Prof. Piero Colonna, from Dutch university TU Delft and KCORC, introduced Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems, which capture waste heat from industrial processes and convert it into electricity. ORC helps recycle heat, turning what we waste today into clean power for tomorrow, explained Colonna, announcing the upcoming release of the Knowledge Centre’s new guidelines for the installation of ORC systems as well.

Laura Alonso, from the Spanish research institute Tecnalia and EU project PUSH2HEAT, which sees EHPA among its partners, presented real-world EU pilot sites where high-temperature heat pumps are replacing fossil fuel boilers in paper and chemical plants, saving hundreds of tonnes of CO annually across Germany and Italy.

Meanwhile, Roberto Bertanzi, from the industrial heat pump manufacturer Turboden, showcased the energy-intensive ORi Martin steel mill in Italy, where an integrated ORC and large heat pump system recovers exhaust heat to supply district heating and renewable power, avoiding around 1,000 tonnes of CO emissions each year.

The key message is clear, and was summarised by EHPA director general Paul Kenny in his closing remarks: industrial electrification is no longer a future vision; it’s a proven solution, connecting the dots between innovation, policy and new EU funding opportunities like the first pilot auction for industrial heat decarbonisation, and the need for bold industry action.

With the upcoming EU Electrification Action Plan and Heating & Cooling Strategy, Europe has a unique opportunity to scale these technologies, reduce energy costs and make efficient, fossil-free manufacturing the new industrial standard.

Curious to know more about industrial electrification? Join us on 9 December 2025 for a dedicated conference at SPARKS Brussels.

How can Europe ensure its energy security while reducing reliance on fossil fuels? What role can heat pumps play in strengthening industrial competitiveness, integrating with grids and district heating, and keeping energy affordable for households and businesses? How can misinformation about clean heating be addressed?

Huge questions – but just some of those addressed across the eight sessions of this year’s Heat Pump Forum on 23-24 September, by speakers from the EU institutions, media, thinktanks, industry, finance communities and more.

Some of the main takeaways? That to meet the EU’s 2030 ambition of 60 million installed heat pumps, around 28,000 should be installed every working day – about three times more than the rate in 2024. Ramping up is critical for ensuring our energy security as Europe edges away from imported gas and all fossil fuels.

We can increase heat pump sales and meet the targets by better using levers like tax: currently eight of the 17 European countries EHPA investigated tax electricity several times more than they do tax. This makes electricity more expensive and electrically-driven heat pumps less competitive. The worst culprits are Poland (seven times higher) and Belgium (over six). Making tax levels fairer will encourage the uptake of heat pumps.

Another key financial tool is the upcoming Emissions Trading System 2, which will put a price on carbon dioxide emissions from buildings and road transport in the EU. This is expected to generate between €340 and €570 billion for governments by 2032. A portion of this – €87 billion – will go into the Social Climate Fund, designed to help vulnerable households manage the transition to cleaner heating and transport.

These funds must be spent effectively, we heard – not on prolonging fossil fuel use but on future-proof investments like energy-efficient building renovations and the rollout of clean technologies. Direct support to low-income households is essential, but it should enable people to switch away from polluting systems, not lock them in.

Discussions also pinpointed that a strong business case is vital, and can come through stable policy frameworks and electricity prices. This includes the newer sector of industrial heat pumps, which can help decarbonise sectors which currently use 30% gas. The specific example of Germany was dived into, where politicisation of a heating law led to a backlash and sales that are not growing steadily.

Installers emerged as a key group the heat pump sector must engage with. Firstly, in terms of ensuring skills levels and training, encouraging schemes whereby – for example – plumbers can take the time to retrain as a heat pump installer without losing income. Secondly, communicating to them and enabling them to become ambassadors for heat pumps, as they are often those who most influence a consumer’s choice of heating system.

Communication was a repeated priority, especially communicating on heat pumps in a clear way which does not leave an information vacuum that risks being filled by fake news. Using stories and encouraging an connection with heat pumps as part of one’s identity can also overcome the risk of disinformation spreading.

Often called the ‘backbone of the energy system’, electricity grids risk coming under too much strain if we electrify without investing in them. However smart planning including the role of heat pumps can reduce the cost, since heat pumps provide flexibility (they can be turned on and off to compensate for higher and lower demand). This will also bring power prices down, making bills fairer for consumers.

During the event, EHPA’s EU-funded projects and their links to the different themes were highlighted – and the Heat Pump Awards ceremony on the first evening celebrated some smart heat pump innovations (with fewer tears than the Oscars!).

The 300 attendees also made the most of the networking opportunities, dinner, lunches and coffee breaks, as well as the live evening entertainment from the Everest jazz quintet.
