How do heat pumps actually get certified with Heat Pump KEYMARK?

Find out in our new video!

We show the journey a heat pump takes on its way to certification.

The video is the fruits of collaboration between Heat Pump KEYMARK Secretariat and UL Solutions, an KEYMARK empowered Certification Body and recognised Testing Laboratory.

It was filmed at UL Solutions’ facilities near Milan.

Through interviews with experts from the Heat Pump KEYMARK Secretariat and UL Solutions, the film explores how certification bodies, testing laboratories and the scheme secretariat work together to ensure the reliability, transparency and credibility of the certification process.

The video features insights from key stakeholders including Leopoldo Micò, Certification Director at the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA), alongside UL Solutions representatives Francesco Nanini, Business Development Specialist and Samuele Belli, Laboratory Supervisor. Together, they explain the roles that certification bodies and testing laboratories play in verifying the performance, safety and quality of heat pumps.

From the application process for manufacturers to the detailed laboratory testing procedures, the video highlights how independent third-party testing underpins one of Europe’s most trusted voluntary certification marks for heat pumps.

The Heat Pump KEYMARK is a voluntary European certification mark that verifies compliance with high standards of performance, efficiency and quality through impartial testing and assessment. Owned by European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and coordinated by EHPA, the scheme provides a harmonised certificate recognised across multiple European markets.

“Through this collaboration with UL Solutions, we wanted to show the people, expertise and rigorous testing procedures that stand behind the Heat Pump KEYMARK label,” said Leopoldo Micò. “Certification is not just a label, it is a collaborative process involving independent experts committed to ensuring transparency, reliability and trust in heat pump technologies.”

UL Solutions joined the scheme as an empowered Certification Body in 2024 and further strengthened its involvement in 2025 with the recognition of its HVAC performance laboratory as a Heat Pump KEYMARK testing facility.

The Heat Pump KEYMARK, Europe’s voluntary, independent certification mark for heat pumps, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. Introduced in 2016, the certification has become one of the most trusted quality labels in the European heating and cooling sector. A decade later, the scheme counts nearly 2,800 active certificates, representing more than 11,000 certified models from over 180 certificate holders across Europe and beyond.

Designed to provide consumers, manufacturers, installers, and policymakers with a clear, reliable benchmark of product performance and quality, the Heat Pump KEYMARK has grown into a cornerstone of Europe’s energy transition. Its wide recognition across European markets, supported by consistent third-party testing and harmonised standards, has helped strengthen confidence in heat pump technology during a decisive period for decarbonisation.

Ten years ago, the scheme was created to make it easier for manufacturers to demonstrate quality and for consumers to trust what they buy. Today, the Heat Pump KEYMARK is not only a success story, it’s the symbol of Europe’s commitment to reliable, efficient, and future-proof heating solutions,” said Leopoldo Micò, Head of Innovation and Certification at the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA). “We are proud of the confidence the industry has placed in the scheme and excited to continue shaping a trusted certification framework for the next decade.”

What began as a forward-looking industry initiative has grown into the largest and most widely recognised pan-European certification dedicated exclusively to heat pumps. It supports manufacturers with simplified market access across borders and gives public authorities a dependable reference for policy design, incentive schemes, and regulatory alignment.

The Heat Pump KEYMARK has proven that a single, harmonised certification approach can strengthen trust and streamline market access throughout Europe,” added Johannes Brugmann, Chair of the Heat Pump KEYMARK Scheme Group (Vice-President in the Business Unit Electric Solutions at Bosch Home Comfort). “Behind every certificate lies a collective commitment to quality, from manufacturers to testing laboratories, certification bodies, and industry experts. Our work over the past decade has laid a strong foundation, and we look forward to further expanding the scheme’s relevance and reach.”

Over the past decade, the Heat Pump KEYMARK Secretariat, managed by the European Heat Pump Association, has continuously developed the scheme’s operational robustness, updated its technical requirements in line with evolving standards, and ensured the certification remains future-proof as Europe accelerates heat pump deployment.

To celebrate this ten-year milestone, the Heat Pump KEYMARK Secretariat will host a dedicated cocktail reception at the Mostra Convegno Expocomfort trade fair in Milan. The event will bring together manufacturers, partners, and industry leaders to reflect on a decade of progress and look ahead to the future of high-quality heat pump certification.

For further details about the Scheme, guidance on how to apply, or any other questions, please reach out to keymark@ehpa.org.

From the latest compressor technologies to the most advanced large-scale heat pumps, the European Heat Pump Summit 2025 in Nuremberg brought together experts and industry leaders shaping the future of the heat pump sector.

The European Heat Pump Association’s contribution to the congress focused on one of the industry’s most crucial topics: trust.

In the session ‘Building trust in the heat pump market: the role of EU policies’ Saverio Papa, Head of Energy Policy, explored how European climate and energy policies are shaping the market.*

Drawing on EHPA market data, the presentation also highlighted a growing industry with more than 300 manufacturing sites and 433,000 jobs across Europe.

As the EU prepares two key plans that will focus on boosting electrification and heating and cooling for 2026, scaling up heat pumps will require stable policy frameworks and reliable quality assurance.

Reflecting on the event, EHPA Director Paul Kenny underlined the remarkable innovation on display – from smarter control systems and district heating solutions to industrial applications and even cleaner beer production.

Yet affordable electricity remains the key driver for the sector’s growth.

Every industrialist I spoke to agreed – projects thrive when electricity costs no more than twice that of competing fossil fuels. That’s what will rocket the sector forward,” commented Kenny.

With technology advancing fast and trust at the heart of Europe’s policy and certification landscape, the heat pump industry is ready to drive the next chapter of the clean energy transition.
