The clean heat transition is no longer a question of\u202fif<\/em> \u2013 it\u2019s about\u202fhow fast<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Since 2015, heat pumps have been steadily eating into the market share of traditional heating systems. And while 2024 was a tough year for overall sales, the technology\u2019s grip on the market held firm.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Heat pumps claimed a solid\u202f 28% share of Europe\u2019s space heating market\u202flast year. That\u2019s just a few points below the 2023 peak of 31.6%, and still more than\u202f6 percentage points higher than in 2021, when overall numbers of heat pumps sold were similar. In short, even in a cooling market, heat pumps are staying hot.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

But zoom in, and the picture gets more nuanced.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In terms of national markets, Norway, Sweden, and Finland<\/strong>\u202fcontinue to lead the chart <\/strong>with\u202fover 90%\u202fspace heating market share for heat pumps in 2024. Norway keeps topping the table at\u202f 97%, showing what\u2019s possible when policy, climate, and consumer demand align.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

A second wave of countries<\/strong> \u2013 France, Austria, Switzerland, and Portugal \u2013 have also crossed the\u202f40% threshold of annual space-heating unit sales, after starting below it just a few years ago. Switzerland\u2019s climb is especially impressive, reaching\u202f76%.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Meanwhile, large economies<\/strong> like\u202fGermany, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK\u202fare moving from a lower starting point. Their market shares range between\u202f5% and 30%, which continues to bring down the European average, but also shows that there is huge growth potential.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The takeaway?\u202fEvery country in Europe has made real gains over the past decade.\u202fBut with the right mix of policy, support, and communication, the pace of change can vary dramatically.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Market share is more than just a number \u2013 it\u2019s a window into momentum.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

To ensure momentum continues to grow for the heat pump sector \u2013 in line with EU climate and energy targets and to ensure European energy security and clean tech leadership \u2013 steady government support is key. This reassures manufacturers, investors and consumers that this is a sector for the future. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

As well as this, making electricity competitive with gas \u2013 for example by shifting taxes off power bills \u2013 ensures a heat pump is a good investment for people\u2019s wallets as well as for Europe\u2019s economy and climate action.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
