EU Member States should reduce electricity taxation to make\u00a0it\u00a0more affordable for citizens\u00a0compared to gas, according to the European Commission\u2019s Citizens\u2019 Energy Package<\/a>, published today.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Jozefien Vanbecelaere, Policy Director at the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA)<\/strong>\u00a0commented:\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cThe electricity-to gas price imbalance has long needed fixing, and it is great that the European Commission now says so. Taxing electricity many times more than gas makes little sense when Europe wants energy that is reliable, clean,\u00a0home-grown\u00a0and competitive. It is now crucial that Member States act to make electricity the obvious and affordable choice for households<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

EHPA\u00a0has long called<\/a>\u00a0for the electricity price to be no more than twice that of gas to make heat pumps competitive.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

We recently published\u00a0a\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0that showed countries which tax electricity more heavily than gas see slower adoption of heat pumps and remain more dependent on fossil fuels.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

By contrast, countries that keep electricity taxes lower and put a stronger price signal on fossil fuels achieve significantly higher heat pump uptake.\u00a0<\/p>

The European Commission says\u00a0Member States\u00a0should\u00a0remove non-energy-related\u00a0costs from electricity bills and make full use of the existing flexibilities in EU legislation to lower\u00a0VAT and excise duty rates.<\/p>

It says this\u00a0could reduce household electricity bills by up to 14%, or around \u20ac200 per year on average\u00a0according to the European Commission.\u00a0<\/p>

EHPA\u00a0is\u00a0also\u00a0pleased to see\u00a0the Commission\u2019s focus on\u202fflexible electricity use and innovative financing models,\u00a0<\/strong>including\u202f<\/strong>social leasing and energy-as-a-service, which can help households overcome upfront costs and access efficient heating.<\/p>

Combined with flexible tariffs and smart energy services, heat pumps can significantly lower energy bills while supporting a more efficient electricity system.\u00a0<\/p>

With nearly 10% of Europeans unable to adequately heat their homes in 2024, accelerating access to efficient electric heating will also be key to tackling energy poverty.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
